D.I.S.C. the Art Textile Program “LINK. The never ending thread” 2017 ( 60 days )

October 1, 2017 – November 29, 2017

The deadline for applications May 1, 2017

For this program we are calling fiber artists; all visual artists who are wishing to gain access to the traditional Indian textile art. To get closer to and express their ideas through textile techniques, materials and concepts.

D.I.S.C. the Art  60 days residency program will start on October 1, 2017 and will end on November 29, 2017.

D.I.S.C. the Art programs are created to include a journey part of the program when artists will be moving from place to place. In this textile program artists will move to five places to meet the backbone of traditional Odian art – textile. This journey is about art, people, how art can connect us, about experiencing, the joy of simple living and about stepping out of the comfort zone.

Textile. In this program artists will have a possibility to be introduced to one of the most beautiful crafts of Odisha – textile; from sacred khadi to double ikat -the extraordinary achievement of textile, and authentic adivasi (Indigenous) textiles. Artists will be introduced to the traditional Odian textile materials, techniques and concepts. The main goal of the program is to transform and express the collected knowledge through the language of contemporary art – but ideologically and conceptually stay connected to the basic concepts of textile – by the technique, material and idea.

The idea.  The idea of this program is the connection. The contemplation how thread connects tradition with innovation, old with new, east with west, artist with artist, individual to social. The contemplation how everything is connected and continuing.

The most valuable is conceptual attachment and transformation of the artists through the techniques and themes as a ritual and return. Ensuring the continuity of thought processes and the ability to speak of relevant everyday topics through the technique dating back thousands of years, cloaked in time.

National and international. We see the importance of cultural exchange and collaborations. That is why the program is created to happen as an international Art and Culture Event. To participate in this program we are calling international participants and Indian participants.

Collaboration. The connection in contemporary Art and it’s concepts can happen through the collaborative creative process.  When different practices meet – there is a connection ( folk artisans with contemporary artists ) and through collaboration it benefits creativity with new ideas, new expressions in Art forms, new visions, new relations, new creations.

The structure of the program. The program contains two stages – first stage is an introductory journey, when artists will be visiting the places of Odisha famous for their traditional textile. In the second stage artists will be working individually – with the collected ideas, concepts, materials. At the end of the residency program artists will show their work at the exhibition.

During the introductory journey to the traditional Odian textile artists will visit five places known for the traditional textile. Artists will stay three – four days at each place to gain more knowledge and understanding about the particular form of textile, and meet the masters. Also artists will see the life cycle of textile. Not only this, they may enjoy the simple way of living in rural Odisha, to enjoy the life style of the textile masters and share some time together. After 25 days of textile journey artists will move to the base camp of the residency where they will work on their concepts for five days. When the concepts will be ready and finalized artists could start working on the particular bodies of art work. At the very end of the program the exhibition of the creative collaboration will be organized at Bhubaneswar.
